SHREVEPORT, La. -- The LeTourneau baseball team turned in another strong pitching effort in a 5-3 game-one victory over Centenary and settled for a doubleheader split after a 12-2 loss in the series finale on Saturday at Shehee Stadium.
LeTourneau (11-9, 9-6 SCAC) has won back-to-back conference series.
GAME ONE: LeTourneau 5, Centenary 3
Blake Goodridge tossed 6.1 innings and LeTourneau scored two runs in the ninth to break a tie game and take a 5-3 victory in Saturday's first game.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the ninth,
Giancarlo Meléndez doubled with one out and
Austin Wiederhold followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Meléndez then came home on a passed ball and a
Jack Kale sacrifice fly added an insurance run to make it 5-3.
Cruz Cox notched the save as he worked a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season. Goodridge went 6.1 innings allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Camden Miller (3-1) picked up the win in relief after going 1.2 innings.
The YellowJackets got on the board first thanks to a Centenary error that enabled Wiederhold to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Jonah McDaniel in the first inning. In the sixth,
Cody Brady launched a two-run homer to center field to break a 1-1 tie and give the YellowJackets a 3-1 lead.
The homer was Brady's second of the year.
Brady finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk in the win. Wiederhold went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
Centenary reliever Coen Laroux (2-1) picked up the loss. Starter Garritt Romero went 7.2 innings allowing two earned runs. The Gents got two hits from Andrew Landry and two RBIs from Turner McLelland in the loss.
GAME TWO: Centenary 12, LeTourneau 2
LeTourneau jumped ahead in the first inning, but Centenary bounced back and took the series finale by a 12-2 final in eight innings.
McDaniel produced a two-run double in the first inning -- scoring Wiederhold and Kale -- to give the YellowJackets a 2-0 lead.
Centenary's Noah Paulson homered in the home-half of the first, a two-run shot to left-center, that tied the game. The Gents went ahead for good in the third inning on Bryce Bienvenu's RBI double and then tacked on runs over the middle innings.
Wiederhold, Kale, McDaniel, and
Zach Baker all had one hit each.
Ameron Sheikh (1-2) received the loss on the mound.
Treyson Martin (4-1) earned the win for Centenary as he went 3.2 innings in relief of starter Roman Ardoin who did not record an out. Laroux earned the save after going the final 4.1 innings.
