MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- LeTourneau baseball homered five times on the day, but dropped a pair of close games in a doubleheader against the Linfield Wildcats.
Austin Wiederhold,
Jack Kale,
Cody Brady,
Chris Savage, and
Jonah McDaniel all went yard on Friday afternoon, but Linfield (14-7) walked it off in game one before edging out a two-run victory in game two in front of a home crowd at Roy Helser Field.
GAME ONE: Linfield 5, LeTourneau 4 (8 Innings)
Clayton Holt allowed three runs -- one earned -- in his 4.2-inning no-decision start in the opener. Holt was relieved by
Camden Miller (3-2), who allowed the walk-off homer in the eighth by Ely Kennel.
LeTourneau (12-14) had no struggle at putting the ball in play, tallying 11 hits in the game, highlighted by Savage's 4-for-4 game.
After the Wildcats brought home a run on a single to right in the first, the YellowJackets promptly answered in the top of the second inning as
Seth Hudson plated two on a triple down the line to give LeTourneau a 2-1 lead.
Wyatt McClory returned the lead to the home team with his two-RBI homer in the fifth inning.Â
LeTourneau could not find its way around the bases until it was down to its final out, as Brady and McDaniel launched bombs on back-to-back pitches. McDaniel's homer gave the Jackets a 4-3 lead and kept the opener alive.
However, the Wildcats would take advantage of a LeTourneau error in the seventh, eventually scoring the tying run, followed by Kennel's ball sent over the right field fence in the eighth to win game one in walk-off fashion.
Zack Hampson (5-0) was granted the win following the walk-off.
GAME TWO: Linfield 7, LeTourneau 5 (7 Innings)
The YellowJackets were held to just four hits in game two, three of which went over the fence, though.
Savage went deep to the opposite field in the fourth inning to score LeTourneau's first two runs. The grad senior was the only Jacket with two hits, totaling his day at 6-for-7 at the plate.
One inning later, Wiederhold and Kale launched back-to-back jacks -- once again on back-to-back pitches -- to trim the lead to 5-4.
The Wildcats' four-run third inning would be the deciding factor, though. This, along with sprinkling in two other runs on singles in the fifth and sixth innings, would keep their lead strong enough to earn victory.
Blake Goodridge (2-2) was pegged with the loss, allowing six runs in his 4.2 innings start.Â
Jack Williams (2-1) earned the win, allowing just four through five innings for Linfield, while Zach Jaeger worked his first save of the year.
McClory led the Wildcats at the plate, totaling three hits and four RBIs in the doubleheader sweep.
