Men's Tennis Outlasted by Concordia in SCAC Tournament

KERRVILLE, Texas -- The No. 6 seeded LeTourneau men's tennis team battled, and battled some more, but could not overcome No. 3 seed Concordia Texas in a 4-3 loss in the SCAC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at the George and Frances Cree Tennis Center in Kerrville.

LeTourneau ends the year with an 8-9 overall record. Concordia (9-8) moves on to face No. 2 seed Hendrix in the semifinals on Saturday at 12 p.m.

LeTourneau trailed after doubles, then grabbed a 3-1 lead in the match, but Concordia rallied back and took the decisive singles match to clinch the victory.

LeTourneau's Andrew Reiman and Fernando Vazquez held a 6-5 lead over Concordia's Rowan Daniell and Diego Garcia at the No. 1 flight when Concordia clinched the doubles portion. Diego Maldonado and Hayden Harry narrowly fell to Steven Scholz and Jake Riggs, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot after Timothy Black and Zach Farris fell to Kade Talbot and Aaron Griffin, 6-1, at No. 2.

In singles, LeTourneau rallied.

Reiman got the YellowJackets on the board with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Griffin at No. 2 flight.

Then, both Maldonado and Harry notched wins at the bottom of the lineup to put the YellowJackets ahead. Maldonado won a second-set tiebreak over Garcia for a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory at the No. 5 flight. Harry also won a second-set tiebreak in his 6-1, 7-6(3) victory over Dylan Garza at No. 6.

Three matches decided in a third set all went the way of Concordia as the Tornados rallied for the victory.

Talbot defeated Vazquez 7-6(4), 0-6, 6-2 at the No. 3 flight. Farris then narrowly fell to Scholz at No. 1 in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, as the match was tied at 3-3.

The match came down to Black and Daniell at the No. 4 flight. Black opened with a 6-4 win in set one, but Daniell took a 7-5 win in the second set. Black battled through the third set, staving off a pair of match points, before falling 6-4.

LeTourneau was making its 12th conference tournament appearance -- and the first as members of the SCAC. The YellowJackets ended the year 8-9 overall and 5-5 in SCAC play, marking the second-most conference wins in a season in program history.
