KERRVILLE, Texas -- The No. 6 seeded LeTourneau women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Friday morning with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 seed St. Thomas in the SCAC Tournament quarterfinals at the HEB Municipal Tennis Center in Kerrville.
LeTourneau ends the year 9-8 overall, its second winning season in the last three years. St. Thomas (8-4) moves on to face No. 2 seed Concordia Texas on Saturday in the SCAC Tournament semifinals.
The YellowJackets battled in doubles play, but St. Thomas took the point to go ahead 1-0 in the match.
Chloe Tesser and
Kylie Weeks were up 5-4 in their match against Lucia Rodriguez and Mariel Herrera at the No. 1 flight when the Celts secured the doubles point.
Maddie Nichol and
Anaiah Smith were defeated by St. Thomas' Aimee Tran and Adriana Iturralde, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot while
Emmy Phillips and
Lindley Vickers fell to Ella Mullins and Nataly Velasco, 6-1, at No. 3.
Weeks, Tesser, and Smith all had tight matches in singles play.
Weeks dropped the first set to Rodriguez, 6-4, but was tied at 4-4 in the second when the match was clinched. Tesser had outlasted Herrera in a first-set tiebreak, 7-6(9), and was up 1-0 in the second before being halted. Smith fell to Velasco in the first set, 6-3, but was within 5-4 in set two before going unfinished.
St. Thomas clinched the match with Mullins' win over Nichol at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Iturralde was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Phillips at No. 5 and Marlie McArthur won 6-1, 6-2 over Vickers.
LeTourneau was making its 12th straight appearance in a conference tournament -- and the first as members of the SCAC. The YellowJackets ended the year 9-8 overall and 6-4 in SCAC play, the most conference wins in a season in program history.
