CLEBURNE, Texas -- The incredible run from the No. 2 seeded LeTourneau baseball team came to an end in the SCAC Tournament championship round with a 10-5 loss to No. 3 seeded Concordia Texas on Monday afternoon at La Moderna Field.
LeTourneau (26-19) ends the year with the second-most wins in the NCAA-era, and the most since 2014. The YellowJackets made a conference tournament championship game for a second straight year and the fourth time since 2014.Â
LeTourneau had to battle through three elimination games to reach the championship round. The YellowJackets won three straight games between Saturday night and two on Sunday to get another shot at Concordia on Monday.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings, LeTourneau fought back to tie the score at 4-4 in the third.
Zach Baker hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it 4-2. The homer was Baker's first of the season, and the second in his YellowJacket career.
Later in the inning, LeTourneau knotted the score at 4-4.
Jack Kale delivered a two-run single to left field that plated both
Cody Brady and
Austin Wiederhold.
Concordia (29-15), which earns the SCAC automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the third ona Logan Smith sacrifice fly. The Tornados added a run in the seventh and then tacked on four more in the eighth to open the game.
Brady finished 3-for-5 with a run scored for LeTourneau, while
Chris Savage was 2-for-3 and Kale 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Wiederhold also had two hits in five at-bats with two runs scored.
LeTourneau put seven on the SCAC All-Tournament team: Brady, Savage, Kale,
Blake Vice,
Blake Goodridge,
Cruz Cox, and
Jake Morris.
Clayton Holt (6-3) made his second start of the tournament and went 6.1 innings with four strikeouts to keep the YellowJackets in the game.
Will Podsednik and Cox combined for the final 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Gavin Voth (3-3) earned the win for the Tornados in relief with four scoreless innings. Louis Alonzo went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Tornados.
