Dr. Tim Sceggel

Dr. Tim Sceggel was named the Vice President for Athletics at LeTourneau University in May 2022. In his role, Sceggel is responsible for oversight of 17 programs and all athletic department operations while serving as a voice on campus as a member of the President’s Cabinet.

Upon his arrival in East Texas, Dr. Sceggel made a host of changes within the department. He began his tenure with a significant restructuring of the athletic department, ultimately hiring 88 percent of the department’s personnel over his first three years. Additionally, on the personnel front, Sceggel brought in the first full-time strength & conditioning head coach in the institution’s history and has achieved a 91 percent staff retention rate, far outperforming the Division III average staff turnover rate of 43.7 percent.

In his short time at LeTourneau, Sceggel has overseen:

  • An average of 10 student athletes baptized each year
  • 3.49 average student athlete GPA (Spring 2026), the highest in school history
  • Being named “Volunteer Organization of the Year” by the United Way (Baseball)
  • Five All-Americans
  • Seven Conference Athletes of the Year
  • Six Coach or Administrator of the Year awards
  • 282 All-Conference honors
  • Five conference championships, compared to only three total in the 24 years prior to his arrival
  • 10 individual conference champions

Other accomplishments that reinforce Sceggel’s commitment to discipleship and excellence include:

  • Becoming the only Division II or Division III institution in the state of Texas to have a female head coach for every women's sport.
  • Building one of the most nationally representative female leadership staffs in collegiate athletics, with six female head coaches among the department’s 11 programs. Across all NCAA divisions, only approximately 25 percent of head coaches are women, while LeTourneau stands at 55 percent. Additionally, nationally only 41–44 percent of women’s teams are coached by women, depending on division, while LeTourneau stands at 80 percent. The department also proudly includes a female head athletic trainer, a role held by women at only approximately 35 percent of NCAA institutions nationally.
  • Implementing a new mission statement and overseeing numerous facility improvements; including repurposing a pool into a new 6,000-square-foot Athletics Performance Lab.
  • Designing and breaking ground on a $31 million indoor facility for indoor track, one of only four such facilities in Texas, encompassing 120,000 square feet.
  • Creating and launching the Center for Athletic Discipleship & Excellence in 2024.
  • Leading the department into membership in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2025 after 27 years in the American Southwest Conference.
Achieving a departmental record score of 4.65/5 on the Best Christian Workplaces survey, placing in the 100th percentile among more than 400 other Christian organizations in 2023, 2024, and again in 2025.

Sceggel places a strong emphasis on faith integration, fostering a culture of discipleship that promotes holistic spiritual, personal, and athletic development among student-athletes. This commitment is further reflected in his doctoral research in Higher Education Administration at the University of Alabama, which focused on the faith development of student-athletes within Christian college athletics.

Sceggel came to LeTourneau from Covenant College, where he served for 15 years, including the final six as Director of Athletics. During his tenure, he oversaw the most successful era in the history of the athletic department. Due to the unprecedented success of the department during his leadership, he received a number of national awards.

Prior to serving as Director of Athletics, Sceggel was Covenant’s Associate Athletic Director, overseeing compliance, event and facility management, and personnel operations. Before Covenant, he served in athletic administration roles at Wheaton College and the University of Louisville.

In addition to his role in athletics, Sceggel also served as Chair of the Health, Wellness, and Coaching Department. He was part of the two-person team that developed and launched the Sport Management major in 2015. He has also taught in graduate programs at several other CCCU institutions, including Messiah University.

Sceggel earned his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama in 2018. Prior to that, he completed a Master of Arts (M.S.) in Sport Administration from the University of Louisville in 2007. He began his academic journey at Covenant College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology in 2006.
