Choctaws Pull Away to Knock Off YellowJackets

CLINTON, Miss. - The LeTourneau YellowJacket Volleyball Team was back in action on Wednesday evening as they traveled to Clinton, Miss. to take on the Mississippi College Choctaws in American Southwest action. After dropping two sets, the YellowJackets responded by taking set three and looked to put together a comeback; however, the Choctaws pulled away to take the 3-1 victory.

LeTourneau (6-20, 1-13 ASC) got off to a great start, going on top 13-9 in the first set thanks to kills from junior Ellie Barber and a trio of freshman in Haley Holthouser, Kayla Ronda, and Alexia Thomas. Mississippi College responded with eight straight points to go on top 17-13. LeTourneau tried to respond, but the Choctaws pulled away to take the first set 25-17.

MC (11-16, 4-9 ASC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set two after a slow start by the YellowJackets. LeTourneau fought back and got within four towards the back end of the second set. The Chotaws pulled away and won the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead.

Mississippi College jumped out to a quick start, taking a 4-1 lead, but the Jackets stormed back to take a 6-5 lead with a service ace by Holthouser and blocks by Barber and freshman Carissa Moore. The teams battled back and forth as LeTourneau led 14-13 and followed that up with three striaght points thanks in part to a kill from Barber and a serive ace from Thomas. LeTourneau held on for the with three of the final four points for a 25-22 win.

At the end of the night, the Choctaws prevailed as they pulled away in the final set with a 25-12 win and the victory. 

Ronda led the way offensively with 10 kills on the night while Thomas and Holthouser added seven each. Freshman Sarah Krippner added 18 assists to lead all setters while freshman Alli Bordelon picked up two service aces.

Defensively, Thomas had 13 digs on the evening while Bordelon added 12 and Ronda had 10. Freshman Carrisa Moore had two blocks to finish out the evening.

The YellowJackets return home on Saturday as they take on the UT-Tyler Patriots at Solheim Arena. All fans are encouraged to come out and support with first serve set for 1 p.m.
