LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJackets volleyball team played in their final home game of the 2012 season on Tuesday night as they welcomed in the No. 1 seed in the ASC East, the Texas-Dallas Comets. In the end, the Comets proved to be too much as they took a 3-0 decision over the YellowJackets.
LeTourneau came out fired up with a service ace to start the match from freshman Alexia Thomas. As the game settled in, Texas-Dallas looked to take control as they pulled in front and took a 7-3 lead.
The YellowJackets stormed back thanks to a pair of blocks from freshmen Kayla Ronda and Haley Holthouser and then again from Thomas and Holthouser. The Comets got their lead to 9-6, but then LeTourneau scored three unanswered to tie in up.
The two teams went back and forth as LeTourneau looked to gain momentum with a first set win. Freshman Sarah Krippner was terrific as she set up kills throughout the first set while Thomas and Holthouser played well defensively as Thomas picked up four digs and Holthouser adding three blocks.
However, with the score as 21-20, Texas-Dallas took four of the next five points to win the set and take the early lead.
From there, the Comets dominated as they took the following set 25-9 and then won the match in set three by a score of 25-13.
Despite the loss, the YellowJackets got great performances starting with Krippner, who picked up 15 assists while adding a kill and eight digs. Thomas added seven kills while Ronda picked up four.
The scoreboard does not tell how well LeTourneau played defensively as freshman Alli Bordelon had 10 digs while Ronda and sophomore Shannon Syme added seven each. The team had five total team blocks with Holthouser leading the way with four block assists with Ronda close behind with two block assists.
The YellowJackets home season comes to a close as they will hit the road for the final weekend of play. They head to Jackson, Miss. to compete in the Millsaps Tournament. They will meet Belhaven and Millsaps on Friday with the games set for 2 and 8 p.m.
