MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The LeTourneau YellowJacket women's basketball team returned to action on Monday evening as they took on the Rhodes Lynx in non-conference action. After falling behind as many as 16, the Jackets began to make a comeback in the second half, but fell short, 67-59.
The Jackets got out to a 4-3 lead after a free throw from junior Andrea Ashley and a three-pointer from junior Jessica Manas. However, Rhodes responded with a 12-2 run to take a 15-6 lead early in the first half. The Lynx extended that lead to double digits after a pair of three-pointers.
LeTourneau began to fight back thanks to baskets from Manas, Ashley, sophomore Shi'rrell Williams, and freshman Ashley Stephens as they got it down to a four point game with 6:14 remaining. However, the Lynx finished the half on a 17-6 run to take a 43-27 advantage at the half.
The Jackets made a furious run early in the second half thanks to great play off the bench from freshman Erica Carson. A layup from Stephens at the 15:03 mark made it a 45-41 game. However, an 8-0 run made it a 12 point game as Rhodes took control of the game.
LeTourneau made one last run in the final 10 minutes to try and pull out a victory, but it was not enough as Rhodes took the win on their home court.
Ashley led the way with 13 points to go with six rebounds as Stephens added 11 points and Manas picked up 10 and three assists. The Jackets could not slow down Lauren Avant, who scored 36 points on the night.
LeTourneau shot 41% from the field and 18% from behind the three-point arch. They struggled from the free throw line, shooting only 62% from the charity striple. They outrebounded the Lynx 44-27, but were doomed by turnovers, committing 25 to only 14 by Rhodes.
The Jackets now go into Christmas Break and will not be back in action until December 29th when they take on the Hendrix Warriors at Solheim Arena. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
