Women Can't Find Rhythm in Loss to Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - The LeTourneau YellowJacket women's basketball team played their third game in four days on Monday evening as they took on the Centenary Ladies in non-conference action. LeTourneau seemed to run out of gas in the waning minutes of the game as the Ladies held on for a 74-66 win on their home floor.

It was a slow start for both teams as they both looked to run on each other's transition defense, but couldn't find good shots and had numerous turnovers in the first couple of minutes. The two teams drew even at eight in the first five minutes.

Centenary (1-6) increased their lead to 13-8, but a three pointer from junior Jessica Manas and free throws from junior Julencia Curtis knotted the game even again.

The Ladies then increased their lead to 21-15, but LeTourneau responded with a 9-0 including a three from sophomore Shi'rrell Williams and jumpshots from junior Ashley Fajardo, freshman Ashley Stephens, and freshman Erica Carson to take a 24-21 advantage.

The two teams continued to battle for a lead, but a layup from Carson with eight seconds remaining gave the Jackets a 33-31 lead going into the break.

LeTourneau (2-3) extended their lead to five in the early part of the second half thanks to a bucket from junior Andrea Ashley and a free throw from Manas, but Centenary responded with seven unanswered points to take a 38-36 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth for the lead before the Ladies went on an 8-0 run with the score tied at 51 to take an eight point lead. Determined to fight back, Manas drained a three and Carson and Williams each made layups followed by a made jumper from Manas to make it a four point game with 3:23 to go.

The Jackets got as close as two with 1:45 to go, but it was as close as they would get as Centenary shooting 50% from the field in the second half proved to be the differnece for the win.

Manas had a terrific game, going for 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Carson was equally impressive, coming off the bench with 12 points and seven boards. Ashley and Williams added 10 points each while Ashley also pulled down seven rebounds and added four steals.

LeTourneau struggled from the field all night, shooting only 33% for the game. They did outrebound the Ladies 54-43, but lost the turnover battle 24-22.

The YellowJackets will finally return home on Thursday and will have their home opener in ASC play against Sul Ross St. All fans are encouraged to come out and support the Jackets with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
