LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJackets women's basketball team was back in action on Saturday as they welcomed in the top team in the American Southwest Conference, the Louisiana College Wildcats. The Wildcats proved to be too much on this evening, as they took over early and rolled to a 98-47 win.
LeTourneau (6-8, 3-5 ASC) got off to a slow start as the game was fast paced from the start. Louisiana College jumped out to a 7-0 lead before junior Alexis Wighaman got the Jackets on the board with layup. The Wildcats got their lead out to 11-2, but sophomore Shi'rell Williams buried a three pointer to make it a six point game.
The Wildcats (13-1, 9-0 ASC) then took control, using a fastbreak offense and trapping defense to begin to pull away in the first half. In the blink of an eye, Louisiana College took a 20 points lead and then carried a 50-20 advantage at half.
The Jackets did not go down quietly in the second half as they attacked the Wildcat defense in the paint and scored 14 points in the first six minutes. However, in the end, it was too much LC as they cruised to the 98-47 win.
Freshman Ashley Stephens led the offensive attack with 11 points while junior Jessica Manas Williams, and Wighaman added eight points each. Williams led the way with seven boards and four steals while Manas had three assists. The Jackets struggled from the field, shooting 29% from the field and only 1-for-12 from the three point line compared to 47% for the Wildcats. LeTourneau was also outrebounded 53-40 and turned the ball over 33 times.
The Jackets return to Solheim Arena on Saturday as they look to get back to their winning ways in the conference, welcoming in the Mississippi College Choctaws. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and the game can be seen live at letuathletics.tv.
