YellowJackets Volleyball Loses in Five to Centenary

Sophomore Alexia Thomas had a team-high and shared in match-high honors with 19 kills in the five-set loss to Centenary on Wednesday night.
Box Score The LeTourneau University volleyball team dropped a  tough, heartbreaking decision to Centenary in five - 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 14-16 - on Wednesday night in Shreveport.

The YellowJackets (5-13) were led by sophomore Alexia Thomas, who hammered down a match-high 19 kills and a .327 hitting percentage. She was joined in the attack by sophomore Kayla Ronda, who had a solid all-around match with 14 kills, nine digs and four service aces. As a team, LeTourneau had 13 service aces including the four by Ronda and four more from sophomore Caitlin Foster-Bright.
 
The Ladies (2-17) had a balanced offensive attack with three players, who had double-digit kills including Sarah Summer, who had 19 kills. She was joined by Brooke Bahlinger and Rachel Perkins, who had 16 and 10 kills, respectively. Centenary setter Beth Nuttal had a double double with 49 assists to go along with 10 digs. As a team, they had 19 service aces including six in the fourth set.

Centenary started the match taking the first set when they outhit LeTourneau, .214 to .128. In the set, Perkins got the Ladies off to a strong start with five kills to pace the attack. Thomas led the YellowJackets to a second-set victory with seven kills in the game; plus Ronda had two service aces. Both teams hit for a high percentage in the third set but it was six service aces by LeTourneau including three from Foster-Bright and two from Ronda that propelled the YellowJackets. Holding a 2-1 advantage in sets, the host team came back in the fourth set with six service aces in the fourth set and a .207 hitting percentage to tie the match at two sets each. The fifth set was controlled by Sumner, who had five kills for Centenary to complete the come-from-behind win.
 
LeTourneau will look to bounce back when it travels to the ASC Inter-pod Tournament at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. The YellowJackets will take on Concordia on Friday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m.
