YellowJacket Volleyball Loses in Three to UT Tyler

Box Score The LeTourneau University volleyball team dropped a 25-12, 25-13, 25-17 decision to the University of Texas-Tyler at the ASC Inter-pod Tournament at Solheim Arena in Longview on Friday evening.

The YellowJackets (2-9, 0-4 ASC), who were energized by a raucous crowd of 500, were held to a .069 hitting percentage in the defeat. Sophomore Kayla Ronda led the attack with six kills; plus sophomore Sarah Krippner added a team-best 12 digs and eight assists in the loss.

The Patriots (12-5, 2-2 ASC) hit at a .314 clip in the straight-set win and capitalized on eight service aces for the win. Three members of UT Tyler had double digit kills including Breanna Brummett, who had 13. Setter Rebecca Floyd set the attack with 36 assists and libero Courtney Criswell had a match-high 22 digs.

The match started with each team exchanging a side out until a 9-0 spurt put the Patriots ahead 13-4 in the first set. A key factor in the spurt was three service aces by Sarah Sciacca. In addition to the strong service game, Brummett and Rachael Harvey each had four kills. The YellowJackets' tandem of Ronda and freshman Alyssa Eden each had three kills to lead LeTourneau.

The second set saw the home team race out to a 7-2 advantage. Again, the Patriots had an answer to the run by LeTourneau when they closed out with a decisive run including a 9-2 spurt to close the game. Harvey added five more kills and Floyd added 13 assists to set the attack.

In the third set, the two teams were unable to hold a stable lead until back-to-back kills by Brummett and Williams for the Patriots gave the visitors a 12-10 lead. The home team was unable to draw any closer as UT Tyler won the set and picked up the conference victory.

The YellowJackets will look to bounce back on Saturday as they will host East Texas Baptist at 2 p.m. and Mississippi College at 6 p.m. in the final day of the ASC Inter-pod Tournament at Solheim Arena.
