Rebecca Stewart (pictured) scored a game-high 17 points as the LeTourneau University women's basketball dropped a 60-53 decision to Schreiner University on Tuesday in the opening game of the UT Tyler Christmas Classic. It is the second time on the season that the Stafford, Texas native has led the YellowJackets in scoring in 2014-15.
The Mountaineers (1-7) were led by a 12-point effort from Kelsie Jackson, who hit four 3 pointers. She was joined in double digits by Tylor Rambeau with 11 and Brooke Sanders and Sabriyyah Fennell each added 10.
The YellowJackets (3-5) started the second half on a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to as little as two, 35-33, with 15:18 remaining. Joining Stewart in double digits was junior
Ashley Stephens, who scored a season-high 14 points – including eight in the run – to go along with 10 rebounds for her first double double of the season. Also pulling down 10 rebounds was sophomore
Meagan Peters, who also had five points and three blocked shots.
Clinging to a two-point lead, Schreiner retaliated with a 13-4 run of its own to push the lead to double digits, 48-37 with 9:12 to play.
However, LeTourneau clawed back to cut the deficit to one, 53-52 with 2:22 to play until the Mountaineers scored seven of the final eight points in the game to seal the victory.
Despite the loss, LeTourneau will close out 2014 when it takes on former ASC member - Texas Lutheran at noon on Wednesday at noon at the Herrington Patriot Center.
