Four unanswered points by junior
Chris Hynes (pictured)Â put the LeTourneau men's basketball team ahead with 8:10 to play and for the rest of the contest en route to a 76-74 win on Wednesday over Schreiner.
Trailing by seven, 50-43, LeTourneau went on a 12-0 run with four big points coming from Hynes, who was scoreless until he hit a jumper and drove uncontested for a layup for his first four points of the game.
Hynes had a hot hand in the contest with a stretch of six-straight in the contest en route to 20 points and was joined in double digits by freshman
Kelby Schimming, who had 14 in the win. With the win, LeTourneau raises its record to 4-5 on the season.
"It was a good program win to beat a very good Schreiner team," said first year head men's basketball coach at LeTourneau
Dan Miller. "I am proud of the way the guys battled tonight and kept their composure when down eight in the second half. It was a great team win as everybody contributed both on the floor and with energy from the bench," said Miller."
Schreiner had four players in double digits - Wes Miller (17 points), Maverick Harris (11 points), Nathan Robbins (10 points) and Stevan Guerrero (10 points) – falling to 7-3 on the season.
The YellowJackets began the game with a 9-3 lead that saw four-different players contribute to the scoring. Later in the half, Schreiner went on a 10-2 run for its first lead of the game – 19-18 -with 8:22 to go in the first 20 minutes.
The lead went back and forth for the rest of the half with three lead changes until the Mountaineers' Luis Mancillas hit a pair of free throws with 1:22 to go in the half for a 32-30 lead. Schreiner took the lead to as much as eight to start the second half for a 38-30 lead with 16:58 to play. The YellowJackets failed to concede and rallied with its spurt behind the play of Hynes and Schimming.Â
LeTourneau returns to the rigors of the American Southwest Conference play when it will travel to face University of Mary-Hardin Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m.
