LeTourneau Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in 68-63 Loss to Louisiana College

After five changes in the first 15:30 of the game, visiting Louisiana College scored six of the final nine points of the first half en route to a 68-63 win over the LeTourneau University men's basketball team on Thursday night in Longview.
 
The YellowJackets (1-4, 0-2 ASC) were led by the second double double of the young season by junior Roozario Wiggins (15 points and 15 rebounds) in the loss. He was joined in double digits by junior C.J. Edwards (15 points), freshman Kelby Schimming (pictured) (11 points) and freshman Sam Talbert (10 points).
 
For Schimming and Edwards, it is season high marks for the LETU newcomers and it marks the third time in five games both Talbert and Wiggins have been in double digits.
 
The Wildcats (2-1, 2-0 ASC) picked up 69.1% (47 of 68) of its scoring from three individuals – Kevin Lewis (21 points), Kevin Cottonham (13 points) and Anthony Gaines, Jr. (13 points). The trio shot 43.5% (17-for-39) from the field in the win.  
 
The lead went back and forth for most of the first half with five lead changes and score being tied on eight occasions. LC took the lead, 24-22, on a jumper by Brandon Watkins with 2:52 to play in the first 20 minutes. The jumper put the visitors ahead for the rest of the contest.
 
Louisiana College managed to stretch the lead to as much as 15 in the in the second half but there was no quit in the YellowJackets. One of the tireless workers for LETU was Schimming, who worked with his teammates to eventually the deficit to as little as three, 51-48, with 3:10 to play. The freshman from Friendswood scored five points in a two-minute span.
 
Clinging to a three-point lead, Cottonham had a 3-point play that sparked a 9-0 spurt that sealed the contest for a 60-48 lead with 1:26 to play. However, twice, LeTourneau got the deficit to five in the final minute including the final margin.
 
Next, the YellowJackets will be idle until Tuesday, December 16th when they face local rival UT Tyler at 7:30 p.m. in Solheim Arena.
