Box Score Howard Payne University scored 18 of the first 20 points of the game en route to an 85-66 win over the LeTourneau University women's basketball team on Thursday night in Solheim Arena.
LeTourneau (9-13, 7-12 ASC) was led by junior Rebecca Stewart, who had 11 points and nine rebounds in just his fourth start of the season. Senior Julencia Curtis and freshman Meagan Peters each added 10 in the loss.
Howard Payne (14-9, 13-7 ASC) was led by Danyel Bradley, who had 22 points, eight assists and six rebounds in the win. Britani Gattis and Shardena Hudson added 20 and 11 points, respectively.
LeTourneau was held 5:44 to start the game without a field goal as the visitors built an early 18-3 lead. However, LeTourneau clawed its way back into the game and cut the deficit to 4. To get within 4, they went on an 18-5 run, late in the first half.
Howard Payne scored four of the final five points of the first half to take a 40-33 lead at the break. At the halftime break, LeTourneau had outscored Howard Payne, 20-9 on points off the bench and 22-14 on points in the paint. However, Howard Payne had hit seven 3 pointers for the lead.
Twice, early in the second half, LeTourneau had the deficit but a decisive 10-0 run by HPU kept the home team away from drawing any closer. Three times in the final 10 minutes, LeTourneau would get as close as 16. Howard Payne sealed the win as they made 14 of 19 free throws and its 44.9% shooting from the field for the contest.
LeTourneau will look to bounce back and return to its winning ways on Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Sul Ross State. Prior to the game, LeTourneau will recognize its four seniors – Julencia Curtis, Ashley Fajardo, Jessica Manas and Alexis Wighaman. All four have made significant contributions to the program, on and off the court.
