YellowJackets Season Ends in ASC Tournament Quarterfinal Loss to UT-Tyler, 84-69

Box Score An early 20-0 run by No. 1 seed and host University of Texas-Tyler propelled the host Patriots to an 84-69 win over the LeTourneau University women's basketball team on Friday night in Tyler.

The YellowJackets (11-15) failed to concede despite the early deficit and worked its way back into the game and eventually cut the UTT lead to six with 15:35 to play. In the loss, three players scored in double digits for LeTourneau including seniors Ashley Fajardo – 16; Julencia Curtis – 15; sophomores Ashley Stephens and Ashley Reed – 10.

The No. 21 Patriots (23-3) also had four in double digits including Brittany King – 18; Teylor Seals – 17; Danai Woods – 13 and She'Cara Humphrey – 12.

55 seconds into the game, Reed scored the first basket of the game on a running layup to give the No. 8 seeded YellowJackets an early 2-0 lead. The Comets went on a 20-0 run during a four-minute stretch of the opening half that put UT-Tyler up 20-2 with 13:47 to play in the first half. However, LeTourneau managed to cut the deficit to as little as eight in the first 20 minutes. In the first half, LeTourneau shot 64% (16-for-25) from the field.

The YellowJackets, who had significantly more fans and were playing in just their second-ever ASC Tournament game, continued to mount a comeback in the second half. LeTourneau scored six of the first eight points of the second half to cut the UT-Tyler lead 48-42 when Ashley Stephens made a jumper with 15:35 to play.

The Patriots scored the next eight points to put the lead back at double digits but there remained a fight in the LeTourneau lineup. However, Texas-Tyler kept LeTourneau from getting the lead under 10 for the rest of the contest to advance into Saturday's semifinal against Louisiana College at 3:30 p.m.
