Box Score The LeTourneau University women's basketball team held host Mary Hardin-Baylor to 38% (27-for-71) shooting from the field but it was a 31-for-44 effort at the free-throw line that led the Cru to an 87-78 win. The two teams combined to shoot 71 free throws in the contest as each team had four players in double digits.
Letourneau, who drops to 7-12 overall and 5-11 in the ASC, was led by junior
Rebecca Stewart, who scored 18 points – 14 of which came in the final 20 minutes. She was joined in double digits by
Ashley Fajardo, who added 12 and
Alexis Wighaman and
Alexandra Burroughs each scored 10.
Mary Hardin-Baylor, who improves to 13-7 overall and 13-4 in the ASC, was led by Alyssa Dean, who scored a game-high 24 – 12 of which came from the free-throw line. Dean was joined in double figures by Jovana Miles – who had a double double – with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Macy Moore added 15 and Jonelle Smith scored 11.
Following the sixth tie of the first 20 minutes, the Cru scored 17 of the next 23 points to take a 43-33 halftime lead. In the run, UMHB stretched a one-point lead – 29-28 – with a 10-2 spurt to spark the lead.
The YellowJackets failed to concede despite getting behind as much as 22 – 65-43 - in the second half. LeTourneau scored the next 13 points to get the deficit to single digits, 65-56 when Wighaman hit a jumper with 7:39 to play. In the run, Stewart hit a pair of 3 pointers to energize LeTourneau.
Later in the half, again, LeTourneau made a run at the host Cru and cut the deficit to six, 82-76, with 1:11 to play. The YellowJackets would eventually cut the deficit to as little as five but UMHB held LeTourneau without a point in the final 28 seconds to come away with the win.
The YellowJackets will continue its road trip on Saturday, Feb. 8 with a 1 p.m. tilt against Concordia in Austin. LeTourneau dropped the earlier meeting in Longview on January 2, 55-50 in Solheim Arena.
