Hardin-Simmons University rallied to win the final two sets to spoil the home opener for the LeTourneau University volleyball team, who dropped a 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12 decision to the visiting Cowgirls.
LeTourneau (4-9, 0-3) was solid in multiple phases of the contest including sophomore
Dolores Kroese, who had her second double double of the season with 10 digs and 14 kills in the loss. In the loss, the YellowJackets recorded 15 service aces in the match with junior
Kayla Ronda (pictured)Â and sophomore
Elyse Wright recording seven and five, respectively. "We really try to serve the ball in an aggressive way to keep them out of system," said head coach
Scott Peluso. "With this approach, we try to make our opponent one, maybe two dimensional."
HSU (2-6, 1-3 ASC) hit .250 and .333 in the final two sets for the come-from-behind victory. In both sets, the Cowgirls were led by the tandem of Hannah Hornsby and Corrie Reeder. In the fourth set, each of them had four kills and a pair of block assists. In the fifth set, the tandem rallied from an early 10-8 deficit on back-to-back kills to tie the set at 10 and teamed up on a block to put the visitors ahead 11-10. With the lead, they never relinquished it to close out the match.
With it being the first home match of the season, the host YellowJackets fed off an energetic crowd of students. "The fans were absolutely amazing. It felt like we had a packed house," said Peluso. "They really inspired our kids to play hard. It was a very fun atmosphere and one we are very appreciative."
Ronda for LeTourneau had a team-high 13 kills and junior libero
Alli Bordelon had 21 digs to move four away from the 1,000 dig plateau. To date, only two players in school history have reached that plateau. Freshman setter
Nicole Mosley had 22 assists and sophomore
Alyssa Eden added 14.
The YellowJackets will have a quick turnaround as they will host a pair of matches on Saturday. First, they will host Howard Payne University at 11 a.m. and follow that up with a non-conference tilt against McMurry at 3 p.m.
