YellowJackets Fall to Texas Lutheran, 2-1

Sophomore Stephanie Vana scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 39th minute but it was not enough as visiting Texas Lutheran University defeated the LeTourneau University women's soccer team, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (1-3) got on the board in the 11th minute when Maegan Idrogo scored from the top of the box from 20 yards out for the early advantage. TLU added to its lead when Cluadia Trevino scored on a breakaway, nearly 10 minutes later, after a pass from Taylor Vatuna to stretch the advantage to 2-0.

The YellowJackets (1-3) failed to concede and began to mount an offensive threat led by Vana. The hardworking junior broke free and split three defenders for a goal from 25 yards out to cut the deficit to 2-1.

"I felt like we battled and worked extremely hard today against a good quality team and just came up a little short," said LeTourneau University head coach John Antonisse. "I'm very proud of the team for the effort they're giving and they're commitment to improvement."

Vana finished the contest with four shots and freshman Riley Scarborough added four in the loss. Junior goalkeeper Jamie Aguillen made four saves in 90 minutes of action for LETU.

TLU goalkeeper Erin Rose made six saves in 90 minutes of action and Idrogo led the Bulldog attack with six shots – three of which were on goal.

The YellowJackets are back in action on Friday, Sept. 12 when they host Central Baptist College at the LETU Soccer Complex at 4 p.m. With limited supplies available, LeTourneau students can arrive early to pick up your official LETU Athletics GameDay t-shirt for 2014-15.
