The LeTourneau University men's soccer team rallied for a 3-2 overtime win over Howard Payne University on Thursday afternoon in Brownwood.
Facing a 2-1 deficit, late in regulation, LeTourneau (4-8-1, 2-3 ASC) senior
Mario Lopez scored his second goal of the season in the 88
th minute to tie the game. The Longview native followed up his own shot that was deflected by the HPU goalkeeper to send the match into overtime. Then, LETU came away with the game-winning goal in overtime when sophomore
Aaron Hastings knocked in a corner kick from junior
Antonio Fernandez in the 94
th minute.
"We fought to the end and never gave up and in this situation it worked out in our favor," said LETU head coach
Matthew Haesecke. The last overtime win for LeTourneau came on October 12, 2013 against Ozarks.
Howard Payne (2-7-1, 0-5 ASC) came back from a 1-0 deficit when they tied it in the 64
th minute on a penalty kick. Then, they took a 2-1 lead in the 74
th minute when Shay Pate scored from 38 yards out.
LeTourneau scored the first goal of the game when junior
Hunter Swift scored on a breakaway in the 36
th minute.
LETU had seven shots on goal to six for Howard Payne. Hastings led with four shots on the match; plus Fernandez and
Mario Lopez each added three shots. Fernandez and
Chris Marquez each had an assist.
Miguel Cabrera finished with three saves on the match.
Next up for LeTourneau is a rematch with UT Dallas, who was victorious 2-0 in Longview on Sept. 19.
