LETU Volleyball Wins Pair at ASC Crossover

The LeTourneau University volleyball team picked up a pair of conference wins over Sul Ross State and Howard Payne at the ASC Crossover on Friday in Tyler.

LETU (8-15, 2-6 ASC) started the day with a 29-27, 22-25, 21-25, 28-26, 19-17 win over Sul Ross State; then, they followed that up with a 25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23 win over Howard Payne.

"I am proud of the fight we showed today," said an excited LETU head coach Scott Peluso. "We found a way to grind out two wins despite some adversity with injuries and illness. Even when we were down there was never any panic. They just focused on the next play. We got kills when we needed them, played some great defense and had some nice blocks at critical times in sets. We had moments when we lost focus but those were short lived and we got right back into our style of volleyball."

An all-around team effort led the YellowJackets to a five-set win over Sul Ross State to begin the day. Junior Dolores Kroese and senior Kayla Ronda each had a double double in the win. Kroese had 16 kills and 17 digs for her sixth double double of the season; plus Ronda had her third double double of the season with 14 kills and 14 digs. Both Kroese and Ronda had significant contributions with three and six block assists, respectively.

Senior libero Alli Bordelon added 31 digs, eight assists and two service aces; plus reserves freshman Morgan Weaver and Liz Williams gave integral efforts with eight block assists and nine kills from Weaver and 17 digs from Williams. LETU also picked up four service aces from junior Jenny Olejar and setters junior Korissa White and freshman Bri Smith had 27 and 18 assists, respectively.

In the nightcap, it was another solid all-around effort for LeTourneau in the win. Kroese had her second double double of the day and seventh of the season with a 17-kill, 12-dig effort in the four-set win over Howard Payne. Sophomore Savanna Stutts and Ronda added 10 and nine kills, respectively as LETU out hit Howard Payne, .132 to .040 in the win.

Setting the attack for LETU were White and Smith, who had 30 and 13 assists respectively. Bordelon had 21 digs and two service aces and the frontline controlled the HPU attack with 11 blocks with freshman Morgan Weaver and junior Jenny Olejar putting their hands on five blocks and Ronda adding three.

Howard Payne was led by the 11 kill, 2 block effort by Micah Cisneroz in the defeat. Three different players for HPU had two service aces, setter Cheyanne Lovelady had a match-high 31 assists and Analisa Anzaldua had a match-high 26 digs.

LETU will face Concordia at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the final match of the crossover before returning for its final three home matches of the season.
