LeTourneau University seniors C.J. Edwards and
Giovanny Thompson each posted career-best numbers in points (28) and rebounds (20), respectively. The career-best numbers were not enough as the YellowJackets dropped a 78-73 loss to Austin College on Tuesday in Sherman, Texas.
Â
En route to 28 points by Edwards, he matched a season-high with six 3-pointers on the afternoon. Plus, the 20 rebounds by Thompson are the seventh most by a player in NCAA Division III on the season and the most by an ASC player since a 21 rebound effort by Connor Robinson of McMurry on November 21, 2014. It is the sixth time in the first 11 games of the season that Thompson has had double figure rebounds in a game in 2015-16.
Â
LeTourneau (4-7) held the lead for most of the first half, building an advantage as large as seven (11-4) just 5:41 into the contest. In the early lead, Edwards scored seven of the first 11 points for the YellowJackets.
Â
It is the second win by Austin College over the YellowJackets on the season, who had defeated LETU, 72-69, in the season opener on November 14 at Longview. The 'Roos are off to one of its best start in school history, who improve to 9-0 in the win. They rallied from the early deficit, scoring 12 of the final 16 points in the first half en route to a 32-28 halftime lead.
Four players for Austin College scored in double digits in the win including a pair of double double performances by Brian Baehl (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Stephen Igbinosa (10 points, 14 rebounds), respectively. Cedric Hudson and Josh Dickerman each added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Â
The YellowJackets cut the deficit to one on a pair of occasions in the second half, including when sophomore
Alec Colhoff hit a 3-pointer with 2:46 to play. The 'Roos answered the threat on a tip-in by Baehl and sealed the victory as they made all four of its free throws in the final 16 seconds of the game.
Â
It will be a quick turnaround for LeTourneau, who will host Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. at Solheim Arena in a non-conference matchup. A reminder to fans, admission to the game is free.
