The LeTourneau University women's basketball team opened American Southwest Conference play with a 61-48 win over Sul Ross State on Thursday night in Longview.
The YellowJackets (3-3, 1-0 ASC) were able to land four in double figures in the win including three starters –
Crystal Jones (17 points),
Ashley Stephens (16 points) and
Bria Goodman (10 points) – plus reserve
LaTanya Drakes scored 10. Goodman had a career-high 10 assists, which is the most by an ASC player in 2015-16 and the most by a LeTourneau player since an 11-assist effort by Kristen Baskin on February 19, 2008.
The Lobos (2-4, 0-1 ASC) had a 13-point effort by Mia Ochoa, who hit three 3-pointers in the win to lead Sul Ross State.
The LETU defense limited Sul Ross State to 29.1% shooting effort in the win. In all three wins for LeTourneau, they have held their opponent under 30% shooting from the field. LeTourneau never trailed in the game as they took a 3-point lead on a 3-point play by Drakes at the 6:15 mark of the first period for a 7-6 lead that put the YellowJackets ahead for the rest of the contest. The 3-point play sparked a 10-2 spurt for LeTourneau, who closed out the opening period with a 17-10 lead.
Early into the second quarter, LETU scored the first six points to push the lead to double figures for nearly the remainder of the game. Sul Ross State would cut the deficit to as little as five on a pair of occasions; however, the YellowJackets went on an 8-0 run to close out the contest for the final margin.
Next, LeTourneau will host Howard Payne on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. in Solheim Arena.
