Baseball: LeTourneau Loses to Centenary, 10-8

A six-run fifth inning led visiting Centenary to a 10-8 come-from-behind win over host LeTourneau University on Tuesday night at Conrad-Vernon Field.

The YellowJackets (10-10) had 11 hits, including three from junior catcher Dillon Yates in the loss. Junior starter Christian Baker went four innings, scattering six hits, six runs (five earned) and struck out one in the loss. Despite the loss for LeTourneau, junior reliever Josh Gimre pitched 3.2 innings of two hit relief. Offensively, in addition to the three hits, Sean Sellers, Ryan Bertram each added two.

The Gents (15-10) rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to score three times in the third and six more times in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead to outlast the YellowJackets. Kody Carson, Ian Graham and Aaron Quintanilla each had three hits to contribute to a 13-hit attack. Reliever Kaleb Kirk, who entered the game in the second inning, came off the bench to pitch 5.2 innings of five hit relief to even his record at 1-1. Kirk finished the game with six strikeouts and walked two in the win.

LeTourneau sent nine batters to the plate to start the bottom of the first for an early five-run lead. The YellowJackets quickly chased Centenary starter Paul Arcement out of the game after five batters. Arcement inflicted his own damage, throwing three wild pitches before exiting the game.

Centenary cut the deficit to two, 5-3, in the third inning when they plated three runs with two outs off of Baker. Then, the Gents took the lead when they sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning. In the inning, the visitors scored six times on six hits for the lead. All six of the hits were singles.

LeTourneau got back on the scoreboard in the seventh when junior pinch-hitter Brandon Applewhite drew a bases loaded, RBI walk to score junior Taylor Empkey. Then, the YellowJackets mounted a comeback attempt in the eighth. Junior Bryce Henry started the inning with a bunt single, then he moved to second when Centenary misplayed the sacrifice. A ground out moved Henry to third for junior Sean Sellers, who delivered a double to cut the lead to 9-7. Then, after a fly out, Sellers stole third and the throw by the Centenary catcher went into the outfield to plate the second run of the inning. Centenary added an insurance run in the ninth for the final margin.

Next, LeTourneau travels to face UT Tyler in a crucial three-game series in American Southwest Conference play. The series starts with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday night at Irwin Field.
