LETU Women's Soccer Begins Conference Play with 4-0 Win Over Sul Ross State

LeTourneau University freshman Keely Hayden (pictured) recorded her second hat trick of the season to lead the women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday in Longview.

The YellowJackets (3-3, 1-0 ASC) started conference play with its second shutout of the season, holding the Lobos to just one shot. Hayden becomes the first LETU player since Erica Sudeck in 2006 with multiple hat tricks in a season.

Hayden put LeTourneau ahead with her first goal of the game in the 22nd minute, when tapped in a shot after a pass from junior Raylene Gould for the early lead. Then, the YellowJackets added to its lead with three second half goals – two by Hayden and another by junior Stephanie Vana. Hayden and Vana have accounted for nine of the 13 goals scored by the YellowJackets in 2015.

The freshman from Alvin, Texas, Hayden scored in the 49th minute when sophomore Kennedy Keer found her to stretch the lead to 2-0. Later in the half, Vana ripped one to the back of the next from 22 yards out in the 69th minute to extend the margin to 3-0. Then, LETU closed out the scoring with Hayden in the 84th minute after a pass from freshman Megan Hoffman.

LeTourneau out shot the visitors by a 30 to 1 margin. Sul Ross State goalkeeper Shelby Stargent made 10 saves in the loss for the Lobos, who fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the American Southwest Conference.

Next, LeTourneau will take to the road to face local rival, East Texas Baptist on Friday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.
