An energetic LeTourneau University men's basketball team returned home from a five-game road trip to post a 92-78 win over Belhaven University on Thursday night in Solheim Arena.
Â
"It was great to finally be back in front of our home crowd," said LETU second year head coach
Dan Miller. "I thought the guys really felt the energy of our student section and that was great."
The YellowJackets (8-10) were led by a career night by senior
Zakarius Wells (pictured), who had his first double double with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior
Giovanny Thompson had his sixth double double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Four of his 19 points came on thunderous dunks that brought the LETU crowd to its feet. LeTourneau has won four of its last five contests.
Â
The Blazers (2-13) picked up 32 and 22 points from Josh Carpenter and De'la Meyers, respectively in the loss. Despite the loss, Belhaven shot 51.7% (30-for-58) from the field including six 3-pointers.
Â
LeTourneau freshman
Caleb Loggins made a lay-up with 8:40 to go in the first half to spark a 14-2 run that put the YellowJackets ahead for the remainder of the contest. LETU went into the halftime break with a 47-40 lead on the strength of a spark from its bench that outscored the Blazers, 18-7. Nine of the 18 came from sophomore
Sam Talbert and seven more from sophomore
Alec Colhoff. The 18 points are the third highest effort by reserves in the first 20 minutes for the YellowJackets on the season.
Â
Belhaven cut the deficit to six with a 3-pointer early in the second half before a 10-2 run put LeTourneau ahead double figures for the remainder of the contest. Wells scored 14 of his 24 and grabbed seven of his 11 rebounds in the final 20 minutes. Plus, Thompson had 11 of his 19 points and four of his 12 rebounds to lead the YellowJackets.
Â
"It was one of those games, where we did some good things but lot of things to work on," said Miller. "I was pleased with the way we took care of the ball with only four turnovers and a seven (45-38) advantage on the boards."
Â
Next, LeTourneau will return to road for its next two games to face East Texas Baptist on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Louisiana College on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m.
