The LeTourneau University softball team split a doubleheader with Concordia University, losing game one – 8-2 and winning the nightcap, 6-1.
To secure the doubleheader split, LETU called on junior pitcher
Courtney Matulis, to silence the Concordia bats. Matulis, who made her fifth start and first since the ETBU series (Feb. 19-20), answered with her first complete game of the season. The Harmony, Texas native raised her record to 2-1 allowing just five hits, an earned run and striking out three. She helped her own cause with her fourth-straight multi-hit game to lead the YellowJackets, scoring twice as the YellowJackets took advantage of four errors by the Tornados. For LETU freshman
Kennedi Dillow added a pair of hits and sophomore
Kelsie Benson had three RBIs to lead the LETU offense.
With the bases loaded, a ground ball hit by freshman
Ashlin Roach was misplayed by the Concordia catcher to allow pair of runners to score for a 3-1 lead. Then, LETU added another run when the Tornados misplayed a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Bailey Woodard, scoring Roach from second.
LETU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a two-out, two-RBI single by Benson. Earlier in the inning, the YellowJackets loaded the bases with three-straight hits. After a fielder's choice by
Brianna Williams, the sophomore catcher brought in a pair for the final margin.
Concordia scored eight unanswered runs in game one to take the first game of the doubleheader, 8-2.
Williams put the YellowJackets ahead 2-0 in the top of the first with a two-RBI triple to right field. Earlier in the inning, LETU started a one out rally with a Matulis walk and a bloop single by LETU senior
Megan Hill put runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice, Williams hit a ball to deep right field to score Hill and senior
Rachel Gauspohl for an early 2-0 lead.
Concordia came back in its half of the first scoring three times on four hits to take a 3-2 lead. They added to their lead with a two run second and a run each in the third, fourth and fifth en route to the 8-2 win. In the third, fifth and seventh inning, LETU had a pair of base runners stranded as they were kept off the scoreboard.
