LETU Softball Loses Series Finale to Ozarks, 5-4

Ozarks scored four times in the sixth inning to rally for a 5-4 win over the LeTourneau University softball team on Saturday afternoon.

LeTourneau (10-13, 6-10 ASC) built an early 3-0 advantage in search of its first series sweep of the season. A two-RBI double by sophomore Ashlin Roach and a RBI single by freshman Macey Mize put LETU ahead early. Earlier in the inning, the YellowJackets had loaded the bases on a single and a pair of hit by pitches.

Ozarks (6-11, 6-9 ASC) got on the scoreboard in the third inning after a LETU error to cut the deficit to 3-1. The YellowJackets nearly extended its lead in its half of the third with runners on second and third with one out before a ground out and a strikeout ended the threat. The Eagles scored four times on four hits including a two-RBI single by Kayla Gray. Plus, a RBI ground out and another LETU error allowed the visitors to take a 5-3 lead.

The YellowJackets cut the deficit to one when sophomore Kelsie Benson hit her first home run of the season in the sixth. Then, they mounted a threat in the seventh when junior Courtney Matulis singled and took second on an Ozarks error. A ground out moved the tying run – Matulis – to third. Then, senior Brianna Williams was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. LETU nearly plated the tying run but Matulis was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by Roach. With the tying run on second, senior Rachel Gauspohl hit a sharp grounder to third that was picked up by the Eagles' third baseman, who tagged third to end the contest.

For Ozarks, Hannah Oler pitched the complete game, scattering eight hits, four runs (four earned) and striking out to improve to 2-2.  The Eagles' Haleigh Moore and Beth Massey each had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack.

For LeTourneau, senior Kayla Cosby fell to 5-6 in the loss, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and striking out four. Matulis had two hits and Roach drove in a pair to lead the YellowJackets.

The YellowJackets will next face Louisiana College in a revised schedule. The ASC series will get underway on Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 23.
