LETU Softball Splits Doubleheader with Sul Ross State

The LeTourneau University softball team split a doubleheader with Sul Ross State, losing game one, 5-4 and winning game two, 4-0.

Game 1
The YellowJackets (12-16, 10-13 ASC) rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth before the visiting Lobos plated a run each in the final two innings for the come-from-behind win. LeTourneau senior Megan Hill had two hits and sophomores Kelsie Benson and Ashlin Roach each had back-to-back two RBI singles in the fourth inning.

Sul Ross State (7-18, 5-14 ASC) was led by Isaura Rodriguez, who had three of the nine hits for the Lobos. Zuriah Leyva had two-run home run in the third inning that put the Lobos ahead 3-0.

Trailing 3-0, the YellowJackets loaded the bases for Roach, who with one out, singled to left field that scored freshman Kennedi Dillow and junior Courtney Matulis from third and second, respectively. Then, after a ground out, Benson ripped a single up the middle, scoring Roach from second and Hill from third to put the YellowJackets ahead 4-3.

An infield single by SRSU with the bases loaded in the sixth tied the game at 4. With two out in the top of the seventh, Destanie Hernandez singled to right field to score the winning run. A late threat by the YellowJackets ended with sophomore Kelsi Coleman being thrown out at second to end the game.

Game 2
In the nightcap, LETU junior Courtney Matulis (pictured) allowed just two hits and the YellowJackets offense recorded eight hits including three from senior Megan Hill.

The YellowJackets took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, two runs came in on a two-run home run by senior Brianna Williams and another came in a sacrifice fly by Roach.

LETU added its fourth run of the game when junior Kaitlyn Allen brought in Williams from second on a RBI triple to the gap in right-center field. Matulis retired the last 10 batters in order that she faced to raise her record to 4-2 for the shutout.

The series will be decided in the final game of the three-game series on Saturday at noon in the second annual Fallen Heroes Day. Prior to the game, LeTourneau softball will recognize select Fallen Heroes and members of their families, who have been prominently displayed on their uniforms throughout the season. Members of the Longview Junior ROTC Chapter will present the colors.
