LeTourneau University senior Megan Hill ripped a walk-off single through the left side, scoring Kennedi Dillow from third for a 4-3 win by the YellowJackets over Sul Ross State on Saturday in Longview. The YellowJackets (13-16 overall, 11-13 ASC) were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore pinch-hitter
Ashley Burdine laced a single up the middle to start an eventual comeback. A well-placed sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Kelsi Coleman moved pinch-runner senior
Rachel Gauspohl to second.
Next, Dillow hit the second single of the inning up the middle, scoring a hustling Gauspohl to tie the game at 3. A ground out to the pitcher moved Dillow over to third.
With a 1-1 count and two out, the senior from San Antonio delivered her first walk-off hit of the season to end the contest.
The Lobos (7-20 overall, 5-16 ASC) scored three times in the second inning for an early 3-0 lead on the YellowJackets.
LeTourneau got on the board in its half of the second. Senior
Brianna Williams reached on a walk, then she moved to third on a single by sophomore
Ashlin Roach. Williams came into score on a fielder's choice by sophomore
Kelsie Benson.
In the fourth inning, the YellowJackets called on senior
Kayla Cosby in relief of junior starter
Courtney Matulis. Cosby shut down the Lobos, allowing just two hits and striking out three in the final four innings to improve to 6-7 on the season. Dillow and Roach each had two hits to lead the YellowJackets.
For Sul Ross State, Zuriah Leyva and Christina Graham each had two hits and Darrian Doederlein had a pair of RBI. Elizabeth Livingston went the distance in the loss, falling to 1-2.
Next, the YellowJackets will travel to Abilene to face Hardin-Simmons in a crucial three-game series. The action will start on Friday, April 8 at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.
