The LeTourneau University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with host University of Dallas, winning game one 9-2 and losing game two 8-2 on Wednesday evening.
The YellowJackets (17-17) started the day with a convincing win over the Crusaders with a 9-2 win including a grand slam by freshman
Macey Mize in the second inning that broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning. For Mize, it was her third home run of the season and the first of three hits in the contest. Fellow freshman
Kennedi Dillow had four hits, plus sophomores
Ashlin Roach and
Kelsie Benson as well as senior
Megan Hill each added two as LeTourneau had 16 hits in the win.

LeTourneau scored a run in five of the seven innings including a four-run third inning that featured the grand slam by Mize and two more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by
Courtney Matulis and Hill.

Freshman pitcher
Samantha Thomas picked up the win, allowing three hits and striking out five in four innings. Sophomore
Ashley Burdine closed out the contest, pitching the final three innings and allowing four hits and striking out three.

The Lady Crusaders (17-19) scored five times in the first inning en route to the 8-2 win. Three of the five came in on a bases loaded double by Stephanie Cervantes for the early lead.

The University of Dallas added to its lead on a two-run home run by Cervantes in the third for a 7-0 lead. The YellowJackets got back on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on an
Ashlin Roach sacrifice fly that scored
Courtney Matulis, who led off the inning with an infield single. The Crusaders got the run back in its half of the fourth for a 7-1 lead.

LeTourneau scored its second run of the contest in the seventh inning on a RBI single by
Ashley Burdine. The YellowJackets were limited to six hits in the nightcap – three from Matulis in the loss.

After picking up the game one win, Thomas picked up the loss in the nightcap to fall to 3-3 on the season.

The YellowJackets come back home to host Belhaven University in a three-game series that will get underway with a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 15 at 4 p.m.
