Belhaven Takes Two from LeTourneau Softball

Belhaven University took a pair of games from the LeTourneau University softball team on Friday, winning game one – 5-1 and taking the nightcap – 3-0.

The Blazers (27-6) picked up the series opener, ending a scoreless game with a three run fifth inning and adding a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Belhaven had 11 hits in the win with eight coming from the top four in the lineup – Dani Craft, Hannah Holloway, Makenzie Hawkins and Carly Yasses. The four also had all four RBI to give support to starting pitcher, Julienne Broussard, who went the distance to improve to 13-2.

LeTourneau (17-19) broke up the shutout bid by Broussard in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to pitcher Ashley Burdine. The first three YellowJackets reached base to start the inning. After back-to-back strikeouts, Burdine picked up the walk to score senior Megan Hill, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.

In the nightcap, again, Belhaven ended a scoreless game with a three-run fifth inning. The Blazers got three runs on three hits and capitalized on a pair of LETU errors to take a 3-0 lead. The YellowJackets' senior Rachel Gauspohl ended the no-hitter bid for Belhaven starter Jordan Herring. LeTourneau senior Kayla Cosby was the losing pitcher, allowing just five hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out a pair to fall to 8-8.

With the threat of inclement weather on Saturday, the two teams agreed to move up Saturday's series finale to 11 a.m. at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
