LeTourneau Baseball Rallies to Defeat Howard Payne, 6-4 in Series Opener

The LeTourneau University baseball team took advantage of a pair of Howard Payne errors in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 6-4 win on Friday night at Conrad-Vernon Field.

LeTourneau (9-16, 6-10 ASC) has won its last three home games on the season. LETU started the eighth inning, trailing 4-3. Junior Kyle Jacobs started the inning with a walk, then he moved to second on a Brandon Applewhite walk to put runners on first and second.

LeTourneau brought in off the bench freshman Josh Raies to pinch run for Applewhite. After Raies attempted to return to first after an attempted double steal, it forced the Howard Payne catcher to make an errant throw that reached the outfield to score Jacobs from second to tie the game at 4.

Next, a bloop single by freshman Lee Hosie plated Raies from third to put LETU ahead 5-4. After Hosie stole second to move into scoring position, he moved to third on a Jacob Simmons fly out to deep right field.

With one out, junior Rayne Hobbs successfully laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Hosie from third for the third run of the evening and put LETU ahead by two, 6-4. Howard Payne misplayed the sacrifice bunt but was able to get Hobbs, who was attempting to take second for the second out of the inning.

Offensively, LeTourneau had nine hits including a season-high three by Hosie. Freshman Andrew Harlan pitched his fourth complete game of the season for LeTourneau in the win to improve to 4-4 on the season in his first Friday night start.

LeTourneau scored three times on four hits in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Hobbs, freshman Aaron Perkins and senior Dylan Wadyko each had a RBI single in the inning. Howard Payne came back to tie it in the third inning. HPU took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Noah Payne.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field.
