The LeTourneau University softball team swept a doubleheader from Hardin-Simmons, 8-4 and 3-0 on Friday in Abilene.
"Our girls fought hard today with a high level of grit and determination that led us to a pair of wins," said LETU head coach
Kate Bell-Keierleber. "We got contributions from everyone and that is what it will take for us to achieve the goals that we have set for ourselves"
The YellowJackets (14-16, 12-13 ASC) rallied from an early 4-2 deficit in the first game to score six unanswered runs for the win.
LeTourneau scored three in the third and three more in the sixth. Freshman
Samantha Thomas came off the bench for her first career win, pitching the final 5.1 innings and holding the Cowgirls to just three hits with six strikeouts.
The YellowJackets took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman
Kennedi Dillow led off the game with her first career home run. Later in the inning, sophomore
Ashlin Roach brought in senior
Brianna Williams on a RBI double.
Hardin-Simmons tied it in its half of the first when they scored two unearned runs off LETU starter
Kayla Cosby. They took their first lead of the game when they scored two more in the second inning for a 4-2.
LeTourneau got back on the scoreboard on a RBI groundout by senior
Rachel Gauspohl. Then, with two out, freshman
Macey Mize brought in Roach and Williams on a two-RBI double to right-center that put the YellowJackets back in front, 5-4.
The YellowJackets added to their lead with a three-run sixth inning on four hits. In the inning, senior
Megan Hill had a RBI double, Williams added a RBI single and Mize picked up her third RBI of the day with a RBI single.
In the nightcap, the LeTourneau got all of its offense on a pair of home runs that gave Thomas enough support to pick up her second win of the day. Hardin-Simmons stranded the bases loaded in the second and in the fifth inning in the loss.
Mize hit a solo home run in the fourth for a 1-0 lead for the YellowJackets; plus Williams hit a two-run home run in the fifth for the final margin.
The YellowJackets will seek the series sweep in Saturday's game, first pitch is scheduled for noon.
