A pair of solo home runs by senior
Rachel Gauspohl and sophomore
Kelsie Benson propelled the LeTourneau University softball team to a 4-2 win in eight innings over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.
The win also gives the YellowJackets its first series sweep of the 2016 season, who improve to 16-16 overall and 14-13 in the American Southwest Conference. The Cowgirls fall to 14-17 overall and 10-14 in the American Southwest Conference.
After first pitch was delayed for two hours due to a wet field, LeTourneau scored twice in the second inning for an early 2-0 lead. The YellowJackets loaded the bases to start the inning, then after a strikeout, LETU plated its first run of the day on a wild pitch. Next, Benson scored sophomore
Ashlin Roach on a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 lead.
Hardin-Simmons scored a run in its half of the second inning and tied the contest in the sixth with a two out double. The YellowJackets had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh before a pop out and fly out ended the threat.
Playing in their first extra inning game of the season, with one out, Gauspohl hit her third home run of the season for a 3-2 lead. After a strikeout, Benson became the seventh YellowJacket to hit a home run for a two-run lead in favor of the visitors.
LETU reliever
Kayla Cosby continued to dominate with a pair of ground outs and a lineout to end the contest. The senior from Lindale picked up the win, allowing seven hits, a run (earned) and striking out four to even her record at 7-7. Gauspohl finished the day with three hits to lead an eight-hit attack; plus Benson had two of the three RBI for the YellowJackets.
For Hardin-Simmons, Sarah Truelove had three of the eight hits to lead the Cowgirls. Starting pitcher Lara Amemermann fell to 4-7, allowing eights and four runs in 7.2 innings of work.
Next, LeTourneau will travel to Irving to face the University of Dallas on Wednesday, April 13 in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
