Ashley Crockett was a force down low on Saturday as she scored a career-high 20 points for the YellowJackets as they took down East Texas Baptist 72-64. LETU sweeps the season series with the Tigers and now boast a 9-4 conference record and are 12-10 overall.
Crockett was 6-15 from the floor and 8-12 from the free throw line. The YellowJackets earned 24 points from the charity stripe in the game.
LETU once again outrebounded their opponent as they pulled down 41 rebounds to ETBU's 36. Turnovers played a big part in the game as LeTourneau forced 27 Tiger turnovers including 12 steals. The YellowJackets scored 35 points off those takeaways.
"I am very proud of our team for going into this rivalry game and taking care of business. We battled through some foul trouble early, but finished strong," said head coach
Leslie Reinecker. "We once again controlled the boards and our players stepped up and made free throws down the stretch to bring home the win."
Joining Crockett in double-figures were the senior duo of
Crystal Jones and
LaTanya Drakes. Jones scored a game-high 21 points on 8-17 shooting from the floor. The ASC's leading scorer also had five steals and three assists.
Drakes recorded her 16
th double-double performance of the season and 25
th of her career at LeTourneau. She pulled down 11 rebounds to pair with her 10 points. The Gardena, California native is ranked fifth in NCAA Division III with 14 rebounds per game.
Jada Roberts was a steady presence running the show for the YellowJackets as she scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Sha'Donnaver Young added six points on 3-5 shooting from the field.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw six lead changes as each team traded runs in the opening period. A fast break layup by Jones gave the YellowJackets a 16-11 lead at the end of the quarter.
LETU would push the lead to 12 in the second quarter on an
Ashley Crockett free throw at the 6:18 mark. LeTourneau took a 34-27 lead into the break.
A 7-0 run by the Tigers drew a LETU timeout as the game was tied at the 6:23 mark of the third quarter. ETBU's Catina Hayes put up a half-court prayer at the buzzer and got it to go, drawing the Tigers to within two at 47-45.
The YellowJackets outscored ETBU 25-19 in the final frame, including knocking down their free throws down the stretch to seal their 12
th victory of the season.
LeTourneau will be back at Solheim Arena for the final time this season as they host Belhaven on Saturday, February 11
th. It will be senior day for eight YellowJackets playing their last game in front of the Blue Crew. Tipoff for the game is set for 1 p.m. against the Blazers.
