YellowJackets Split Doubleheader, Win Series over University of the Ozarks

LeTourneau softball won their second American Southwest Conference series as they took a 10-0 victory over University of the Ozarks in the series finale. The Eagles took game two of the series 7-3 over LETU in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader.

LeTourneau (11-14, 6-12 ASC) once again used big offensive innings to put away their opponent. The YellowJackets scored four runs in the third inning and then poured it on again in the fifth inning scoring six runs. The pressure was then on the Eagles who needed to score to extend the game.

Sophomore Faith Genoway made sure that didn't happen as she retired three straight batters, one with a strikeout, to run-rule Ozarks and end the series. Genoway faced 16 batters and struck out five, forced eight groundouts and gave up just two hits and zero runs. The Lake Jackson native improves to 7-4 on the season.

Four YellowJackets went 2-for-3 at the plate including junior Ashlin Roach who recorded two RBIs. Freshman Taylor MacKenzie and junior Kelsi Coleman each had an RBI. Freshman Shelby Barrick was 2-for-4 at the plate bringing in two runs.

Roach started off the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly that brought home Coleman. Barrick followed that with an RBI single as senior Whitney Judd scored. Another sac fly from Bailey Woodard would score Courtney Matulis. An Eagle error on would lead to the fourth run of the inning as the YellowJackets took a commanding lead.

The deciding fifth inning saw more timely hits for LETU as MacKenzie singled to left field to score Alyssa Pierce. Kelsi Coleman followed suit and singled down the left side bringing home Kaitlyn Allen.

Hayley Hurley and Coleman each scored on Ozarks errors before Roach doubled to left field to bring home Matulis. Barrick finally switched things up and decided to single to right field and scored Roach for the sixth run of the inning.

In game two of the series, the Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 first-inning lead and would score a run in each of the next four innings to hold on for the victory.

LeTourneau couldn't take advantage of runners in scoring position as they left eight stranded. LETU had four stolen bases in the game including two from senior Courtney Matulis who went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.

Ashley Burdine falls to 3-7 on the year despite four strikeouts for the YellowJackets. The junior pitcher gave up six runs on eight hits in her 3.2 innings in the circle.

The YellowJackets will now turn their attention to ASC foe Louisiana College who will make the trip to Longview for a three-game series. The Wildcats come in with a 20-2 overall record and 14-1 in conference play. The series will kick off with a doubleheader on Friday night with first pitch at 5 p.m. The series finale will be Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
