JACKSON, Miss. - The LeTourneau University softball team would see host Belhaven College plate the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh before allowing a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to fall in game one of a three-game series by a final of 4-3 at Jim McLeod Field in Jackson, Miss. on Friday, March 2nd.
With the loss, LETU falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the American Southwest Conference while the Blazers picked up win number four to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the ASC.
Junior
Faith Genoway took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in three innings of relief work while
Julie Martinez took a no decision. The sophomore from Troy, Texas threw the first four innings of the game, and gave up two runs on four hits while issuing three walks.
Ashley Burdine tossed the final 0.2 innings of work, allowing one hit.
The YellowJackets would be limited to just seven hits in the game, with junior
Macey Mize leading the charge with two hits in two official at-bats. Mize also drove in two of LeTourneau's three runs, hitting a home run and triple for two of LETU's three extra-base hits.
Most of LeTourneau's offensive output came in the top of the second, with
Shelby Barrick getting on with a one-out single before Mize would plant a pitch over the left field fence to break a 0-0 tie. Belhaven would use a an RBI double in the bottom of the third to cut the LETU lead in half, but see the YellowJackets get the run back in the top of the fifth with a two out RBI single by
Ashlin Roach.
The Blazers added a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, utilizing a leadoff walk to come around and score with two outs on an RBI single, and then tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out rally. Three straight singles with two-outs would drive in the tying run and put the game-winning run on second, but LeTourneau would escape without any more damage done to get a chance in extra-innings.
In the extra frame, LETU would go down in order, giving Belhaven a chance to end things in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff walk would once again cause issues for the YellowJackets, as an infield single and sacrifice bunt would move the game-winning run to third before a sacrifice fly to center field ended the game.
A chance to bounce back will present itself tomorrow afternoon, with a doubleheader against the Blazers scheduled for 12 p.m.
