Softball Uses Long Ball To Sweep Ozarks

LONGVIEW, Texas - Behind a total of five home runs which included two from junior catcher Macey Mize, the LeTourneau University softball team earned a series victory by sweeping the University of the Ozarks by scores of 8-3 and 9-1 in six innings at the LETU Softball Field in Longview, Texas on Saturday, April 7th.

The two victories moves LETU to 9-18 overall and 7-16 in the American Southwest Conference while the Eagles fell to 4-17 overall and 4-13 in the ASC.

Game One:
Game one saw the YellowJackets jump out all over the Eagles early on, doing all of their scoring in the first three innings of the game while keeping Ozarks to just one hit through three innings. Ashlin Roach would deliver the first home run of the weekend with a two-run blast in the bottom of the first to give LeTourneau a 2-0 lead after one inning of play before seeing LETU put together three hits which included an RBI single by Ethel Warren to tack on two more runs in the second.

Four-straight hits to open up the bottom of the third saw Mize blast her first homer of the day over the left field wall following a Roach leadoff double as the YellowJackets scored four runs on five hits while forcing a pitching change by the Eagles to open up an 8-0 lead. Ozarks managed to score one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but never could manage to keep momentum going as LeTourneau would shut down any potential rally in all three innings before holding UO scoreless in the seventh to take the series opener by a five-run margin.

Leading the 12-hit effort was five different YellowJackets with two hits in the game as Mize and Roach each drove in two runs. Roach and Kelsi Coleman added doubles to give LETU four extra-base hits in the game, in addition to five stolen bases. A complete game effort by Julie Martinez in the circle saw the sophomore allow just one earned run and strike out four on six hits, with only one inning featuring more than one hit by the Eagles.

Game Two:
An even more dominant performance in game two saw the YellowJackets score in four of the six innings played in the game, putting up three home runs as part of a nine-hit effort. A similar start to game one saw a one-two-three start to the game for Ozarks before Mize delivered the two-run home run to give LeTourneau a 2-0 lead which would grow to 4-0 after a pair of wild pitches in the bottom of the third.

Ozarks managed to score their only run of the game in the top of the fourth, using back-to-back two out singles to score a leadoff single and make the score 4-1 in favor of LETU, but saw the YellowJackets hit back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the bottom of the fourth to go up by a score of 6-1. Neither team would put a runner on in the fifth, sending things to the sixth inning where LeTourneau would put the pressure on and put their first three batters of the inning on base to load the bases with no outs. Following an infield fly and sacrifice fly which scored two runs following a throwing error, an infield single by sophomore Taylor MacKenzie ended the game by bringing home Katelyn Trombley to give LETU the sweep.

It would be senior leadership carrying the offensive load in the night cap, with Roach and Bailey Woodard each collecting two hits while Mize drove in a team-high two runs for the second straight game. Starting pitcher Amber Fillbrandt shut down UO all night, throwing a complete game and allowing just one run while striking out nine batters and facing just six batters over the minimum.

LETU will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon, playing a single game starting at 1 p.m. at the LETU Softball Field.
