RICHARDSON, Texas - Facing unfamiliar opponents to open up the 2018 season, the
LeTourneau University volleyball team dropped a pair of three-set matches to Wisconsin-Superior and Heidelberg University at the University of Texas-Dallas Labor Day Tournament at the UTD Activity Center in Richardson, Texas on Saturday, September 1st.
The loss leaves the
YellowJackets with an 0-2 record following the opening weekend of play while the
YellowJackets of Wisconsin-Superior and the Student Princes of Heidelberg both move to 1-2 overall.
"I saw a lot of great moments today and we are playing very athletically" said head coach Ashley
Tiernan following the matches. "The mental errors got to us and we will be working to correct those and keep our focus." "I am excited to see where this team will be in the near future."
LETU vs. UW-Superior:
Unforced errors would be the undoing of
LeTourneau in the first match of the season, committing errors while managing to record just 30 kills on 106 attacks for a .085 hitting percentage.
LETU's best hitting percentage of the match would come in the first set with a .194 hitting percentage as
LeTourneau never would be able to build a lead of more than two points.
Individually, freshman
Kianna Crow would be the only
LETU player to reach double-digit kills with a total of 10 to go along with seven digs while
Audrey Galindo recorded a team-high nine digs. Both
Cam Taylor and
Makenna Schultz would manage to provide double-digit assists with Taylor marking a team-high 16 assists while Schultz had 12.
LETU vs. Heidelberg:
Offensive woes would carry over into the second match of the day for
LeTourneau as a 0.63 hitting percentage and just 35 kills for the match compared to 39 kills for Heidelberg. Similar to the first match, the
YellowJackets fell behind into an early hole into the first set that they would be unable to overcome and saw their best opportunity in the second set go squandered with the Student Princes scoring the final two points of the set.
Crow managed to lead
LETU for the match with a team-high 16 kills and a .229 hitting percentage while
Mikayla Thomas had seven kills and two digs. A team-high 17 assists by Taylor went along with seven digs for the sophomore while Galindo recorded 11 total digs.

Another road match for the
YellowJackets will take place on Tuesday, September 4th when
