LONGVIEW, Texas – A pair of goals just 2:42 apart midway through the first half would allow the LeTourneau University women's soccer team to break open a scoreless deadlock and pull away for a 4-0 victory over McMurry University in non-conference action at the LETU Soccer Field in Longview, Texas on Saturday, September 1st.
Earning their second straight shutout win to start the season, LETU is now 2-0 overall while the War Hawks slipped to 1-1 overall.
How It Happened:
- The first 20 minutes of the first half would go by without any shots taken despite the YellowJackets earning a corner kick and pressuring McMurry early on.
- Kelli Sonnier found herself with an open look in the 24th minute after a pass would be sent in by Rebekah Stevenson and the junior would make the most of her opportunity by finding the back of the net for her first goal of the year.
- The score would go from 1-0 in favor of LETU to 2-0 a little less than three minutes later as newcomer Reagan Sandford found Madison Urbana for her first goal of the season to give the YellowJackets breathing room while looking to add on more.
- Despite not being able to extend their lead any further in the first half, Sandford would be on the receiving end of a corner kick from Kara Gipson at the 63:48 mark to net her second goal in as many games with LeTourneau in full control at 3-0 with just under 30 minutes to play.
- One final goal by Victoria Ratliff in the 73rd minute put the game out of reach for McMurry as the four-goal lead would be held for the remainder of the contest.
Key Performances:
- LeTourneau would only allow two shots to the War Hawks which included one shot on goal, which would be turned away by goal keeper Mari Zeitlow.
- The YellowJackets held a commanding 10-0 advantage in corner kicks, making the most of their set pieces while scoring on four of their five shots on goal.
- The nine shots for the YellowJackets would all be taken by different players, with substitutes accounting for four of the nine shots.
- All four LETU goals would be assisted in the game, with Lexi Funk also adding a helper in the game.
