Men's Soccer Falls At #15 UMHB

BELTON, Texas - Stunning the number 15 nationally-ranked team with the fastest goal to start a game in American Southwest Conference history, the LeTourneau University men's soccer team would be unable to build momentum off of an early lead in a 6-1 defeat at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, September 15th

LETU is now 1-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the American Southwest Conference while the Cru remain perfect at 6-0 and 2-0 in conference play.

How It Happened:
  • LETU wasted no time trying to set the tone early as Varney Carter would get the YellowJackets on the board just 11 seconds into the game to give LeTourneau a 1-0 lead over a shocked Cru squad.
  • Early scoring wouldn't be finished however, as UMHB responded with a goal at the 4:05 mark and then took the lead in the 12th minute to go up 2-1.
  • Things would appear to settle down following the opening 15 minute barrage of goals as opportunities for both squads came few and far between for the next 30-plus minutes of game action featured only one shot from either team.
  • A goal for the Cru just 1:25 before halftime doubled the UMHB lead as the YellowJackets would trail 3-1 at the break, seeing Mary Hardin-Baylor swing momentum in their favor heading to the locker room.
  • It would take until the 58th minute in the second half for the ball to find the back of the net as the Cru managed to net a goal off a rebounded shot that would be turned away from goalie C.J. Leyva, with LETU facing a 4-1 deficit with just over 30 minutes left in the game.
  •  Things would go from bad to worse at the 69:41 mark as UMHB added another goal on a rebound from a saved shot to go up 5-1, and would eventually tack on a final goal in the 80th minute.
Key Stats:
  • Having to deal with a fast and physical style played by the Cru, LETU would be limited to just two shots in the game compared to 13 for UMHB, while holding a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
  • Leyva played 83:07 in goal for the YellowJackets, making six saves while Tanner Johnson would also see time in between the pipes and turning away one shot.
  • Carter's goal of 11 seconds broke the previous ASC record of 16 seconds which was set on September 29, 2006 by Jeremy Whitehurst of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
What's Next?
Playing at home for the first time since August 31, LeTourneau will play host to McMurry University to open up a short weekend home stand on Thursday, September 20th at 7:30 p.m. The 2-1-2 War Hawks will be playing their first game in a week after earning a 2-1 home win over Sul Ross State on September 13th.
