JACKSON, Miss. – Leading two sets to one, the LeTourneau University volleyball team would be sent to a fifth set before finding a way to claim a five-set road victory at Belhaven University inside of Rugg Arena in Jackson, Mississippi on Saturday, September 15th.
Scores of the match were 19-25, 25-20, 25-14, 19-25, and 15-13. LETU now sits at .500 overall with a 5-5 record and a perfect 2-0 mark in the American Southwest Conference while the Blazers fell to 7-3 overall and 0-2 in the ASC.
How It Happened:
- Falling victim to another slow start to the match, the YellowJackets would see Belhaven jump out to an early 6-2 lead and manage to hold their lead for the rest of the first set.
- LETU managed to close the deficit to two at 11-9 midway through the set, but four of the next five points would be scored by the Blazers to build back out their lead and not look back.
- A tightly contested second set would go back-and-forth throughout the set as 14 different ties would be seen with neither team allowing for a run until the end.
- After seeing the Blazers match them point-for-point to tie the set at 18-18, seven of the next eight and eight of the final nine points of the set would be scored by LETU to close out a 25-20 set victory and tie the match at one game each.
- Finally managing to break away with a lead, the YellowJackets would take full advantage of Belhaven errors in the third set as LeTourneau would take a 12-7 lead on a Cam Taylor service ace before continuing to build their lead and not allow any chances for a comeback.
- LETU looked poised to close out the match in the fourth set, managing to take a 12-7 lead on back-to-back Belhaven attack errors that would force a Blazer timeout but saw BU battle back to tie things at 17-17.
- In the midst of the tie was a 10-1 run by the Blazers to catapult Belhaven to a 22-17 lead and claim a six-point set victory to send things to a deciding fifth set.
- It would appear as though the YellowJackets would take no chances on letting things slip away in the fifth set after jumping out to a 6-2 lead, but another Belhaven timeout seemed to turn the tide as the Blazers managed to score four quick points to tie things at 6-6.
- Following an LETU timeout, it would be three more points to cap off a 7-0 run by the Blazers before the YellowJackets managed to go on a 5-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 11-9.
- Things would go down to the wire with one final tie at 11-11, but it would be LeTourneau scoring three of the next four points to give themselves an opportunity at match point.
- Belhaven held off the match-ending point on the first attempt, but would be unable to mount a comeback with the YellowJackets getting a block from freshman Kianna Crow to win 15-13.
Key Stats:
- LETU picked up big points at both the service line and on the defensive side of things, holding an 8-1 advantage in service aces while doubling up the Blazers 10-5 in blocks.
- Crow stepped up big throughout the entire match, notching 20 kills and 15 digs for a double-double to go along with three service aces in the match.
