Early Goals Sink LETU Men's Soccer In 3-0 Loss

JACKSON, Miss. – Early pressure by the LeTourneau University men's soccer team would quickly flip following a red card as host Millsaps College would score two goals just 30 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead before adding a goal in the closing moments of the game to take a 3-0 win over the YellowJackets at Harper Davis Field in Jackson, Miss. On Tuesday, September 4th.

With the defeat, LETU falls to 1-1 on the season while the Majors are now 1-2 through three matches.

How It Happened:
  • Early chances were found by the YellowJackets in the opening minutes, as LeTourneau earned a corner kick and three minutes later saw Teddy Bogba take two shots and force a save by Millsaps goalkeeper Alfie Miller.
  • A challenge in the 19th minute by LETU's Anthony Orozco would result in a red card and see the freshman sent off, forcing the YellowJackets to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
  • The man advantage proved to play a large role as less than two minutes later the Majors would find the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
  • Play would resume as Millsaps would take advantage of a LeTourneau mistake to push the ball into the attacking third where a second goal would be found just 30 seconds later as a shocked LETU team would find themselves down 2-0 and having to try and dig themselves out of a first-half hole.
  • Having to try and find some offense while playing a man down, LeTourneau saw limited opportunities throughout the rest of the first half and could not cut into the lead as the YellowJackets went into halftime trailing by their largest deficit of the year.
  • With Millsaps holding a 2-0 lead, the Majors would not press in the second half but rather defend their advantage which saw LETU with opportunities that once again did not break in their favor.
  • A third and final goal would be scored in the 90th minute by Millsaps as the Majors would push the issue and attack throughout the final 10 minutes of action.
Key Stats:
  • Millsaps would outshoot LETU 15-9 and hold a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal, making the most of their opportunities on goal.
  • LeTourneau's first two shots of the game came from junior transfer Bogba, with the third shot from the YellowJackets also forcing a save from Millsaps.
  • All three goals for the Majors would be assisted in the contest, with Jeff Bruni scoring the final two goals of the game.
What's Next?
A chance to rebound against another Southern Athletic Association school will be next in store for LeTourneau, as the YellowJackets host Rhodes College at 7 p.m. in Longview on Friday, September 7th.
