AUSTIN, Texas -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team set the school record for victories in the NCAA era Friday after sweeping Howard Payne at the American Southwest Conference Crossover II.
LeTourneau captured its 14th win in the convincing 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 victory over HPU in the second match of the day at Concordia Texas. LETU (14-10, 7-4 ASC) dropped the first match to the host Tornados, 25-20, 25-17, 12-25, 25-19.
In the win over Howard Payne, the YellowJackets hit .304 -- the highest attack rate since the .384 in the season opener on Aug. 30. LeTourneau had a whopping .630 hitting percentage in the second set, pounding 17 kills with no errors in 27 swings.
Cam Taylor gave LeTourneau a 13-10 lead in the second set when she fired off an ace. Following an HPU sideout, LETU went on a 5-0 run behind an ace by
Taylor Smith and kills by
Mikayla Thomas and
Kianna Crow to jump ahead 18-11. Howard Payne picked up another sideout, but LeTourneau responded with another five-point surge, highlighted by two kills by Crow and one each from
Natalie Connelly and Smith. That moved the YellowJackets within two points of winning the set. Connelly finished it off with a kill and combination block with
Madison Denega.
Connelly pounded back-to-back kills in the third set to put the YellowJackets on top, 16-12, before
Natalie Davenport had an ace in the midst of a six-point service run. That surge included a putaway by Crow and a block by
Lexie Welton and Connelly, and LETU found itself sitting on a 21-12 lead. Welton put down a kill, and Crow served an ace to extend the margin to 10. After Howard Payne scored the next two points, LeTourneau wrapped up the win on putaways by Smith and Thomas.
Connelly had 11 kills, hit .526 and had three blocks. Crow finished with 14 kills, 13 digs, three aces and two blocks. Thomas had seven kills and two blocks. Smith had six kills, two aces and 14 digs.
Audrey Galindo finished with 12 digs, an ace and four assists. Davenport had 32 assists and two aces.
LeTourneau had nine aces to Howard Payne's three.
In the loss to Concordia, LETU pulled itself back into the match after dropping the first two sets with a dominating performance in the third set. The YellowJackets hit .367 with 13 kills and two errors, while holding the Tornados to an .051 attack percentage. But Concordia (18-4, 10-1) regained momentum in the fourth set to finish it off.
Crow had 22 kills, 15 digs and two aces. It was the sixth time Crow put down over 20 kills in a match this season. Smith added nine kills and 19 digs. Davenport had 43 assists, 10 digs and an ace. Welton had eight kills and two blocks.
Cam Taylor finished with 22 digs, and Galindo had 19. Sarah Ghormley had 17 kills and 13 digs, and Marjani Myles and Tristyn Massey added eight kills apiece for Concordia.
LETU will meet Mary Hardin-Baylor at noon Saturday to wrap up the Crossover.
