LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau University women's soccer team lost to Howard Payne, 1-0, Thursday night in the penultimate home game of the season.
The YellowJackets (8-6-1, 4-4-1 American Southwest Conference) will host Sul Ross State at 1 p.m. Saturday in the final home match this year.
A scoreless battle for 84 minutes went sour for the host YellowJackets when Lesly Garcia scored the gamewinner with six minutes remaining. Jayde Myamoto had the assist for Howard Payne, which improved to 7-8-2, 3-5-1 in the jam-packed ASC middle-of-the-pack standings.
LETU outshot HPU, 25-5, but could not find the back of the net. Howard Payne goalkeeper Delaney Castor stopped 11 shots. LeTourneau keeper
Mackenzie Wilbanks made one save.
In the 71st minute, LeTourneau's
Kara Gipson ripped a shot wide left. Less than a minute later,
Reagan Sandford had two cracks, but both of them were blocked.
Cecilia Pichardo followed up Sandford's second shot with an attempt that sailed high, completing an offensive flurry for the host YellowJackets, but they weren't able to capitalize.
Following the visiting Yellow Jackets' goal, Gipson gave LeTourneau one last chance to force overtime, but her shot in the 90th minute was saved by Castor, and time ran out.
LeTourneau has two regular season games remaining for ASC Tournament seeding positioning. The YellowJackets remain in fifth place in the league standings, a point ahead of Belhaven, East Texas Baptist and Concordia Texas. Texas at Dallas is four points ahead of LETU in fourth. The top four teams in the league host an ASC Tournament quarterfinal match.
