Women's Soccer Drops Home Finale

LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau University women's soccer team lost to Sul Ross State, 2-0, in the final home match of the season.

The YellowJackets (8-7-1, 4-5-1 American Southwest Conference) blistered the Lobos (3-9-4, 2-6-2) with 33 shots, including 21 in the first half. But LETU surrendered a goal in each half, allowing Sul Ross State to escape with a win, despite attempting just seven shots.

Sonrisa Navidad picke up the gamewinning goal on an assist from Rebecca Esquivel in the 20th minute. Aylin Villalobos tacked on another goal when she banged in a setup from Marli Martin in the 58th minute.

LeTourneau's Reagan Sandford ripped off 12 shots, including three on goal, and Skylar Thomassie attempted five shots, but the YellowJackets were kept off the board. Sandford blasted eight shots in the first half, forcing Lobos goalkeeper Alitzel Ybarra to stop two of them.

Lexi Funk, making her second start in the last three games, put a shot on goal in the 14th minute to the bottom right portion of the net, but Ybarra made the save. Three minutes later, Kara Gipson's shot was stopped by Ybarra, who finished with 12 saves. In the 33rd minute, Ybarra prevented Cecilia Pichardo from tying the game. Nine seconds into the 35th minute, Julia Martinez was denied by the Lobos keeper.

The YellowJackets had eight of their 12 shots on goal in the first half.

Sandford tried to tie the game less than two minutes into the second half, but Ybarra made the save. Four minutes after the Lobos picked up their second goal, Pichardo made a pitch to cut the deficit in haf, but Ybarra stopped the shot. Izzy Arnold's shot in the 68th minute was turned aside by the Lobos keeper. Gipson gave LETU one last chance in the 83rd minute, but her shot was saved.

Jackets keeper Kiersten Reeser finished with three saves.

The YellowJackets will conclude the regular season 5 p.m. Friday at East Texas Baptist.
