YellowJackets Shut Out Sul Ross State

LONGVIEW -- Teddy Bogba turned to the scorer's table, smiled and offered a few words.

"Let's go have some fun," he said.

Saturday was all fun for the YellowJackets men's soccer team, who blanked Sul Ross State, 3-0, in the final home match of the season at LETU Soccer Field. The win moved LeTourneau University (7-8-2 overall, 5-5 in the American Southwest Conference) within a win of the .500 mark for third time this season. The Jackets will get that chance 7:30 p.m. Friday at East Texas Baptist, whose game Saturday against Howard Payne was postponed until 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

"We had one goal today, and that was to win," said Dustin Gray after scoring his third goal of the season in the eighth minute. "Keeping a clean sheet was, yeah, just a plus, another thing to take away with us."

It was LeTourneau's second shutout of the weekend homestand, both of them with Austin Dunegan in goal. The YellowJackets have five clean sheets this season.

Gray's goal, on an assist from Oliver Placencia, served as the gamewinner. It was his first gamewinning goal this season, and the second of his career.

"I was just fortunate to be there to have the opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net," Gray said. "At that point in time, it was a great ball from Oliver. Couldn't have been there without Jared (Woodruff) putting the ball in, so all around, it was a team goal. I was just fortunate to be the one to put it in the back of the net."

Chancey Davis scored on an unassisted goal in the 24th minute to pad the YellowJackets' lead to 2-nil. It was Davis' second goal this year. Varney Carter made it 3-0 when he converted a through ball from Andrew Mejia in the 38th minute to send LETU into the intermission with a comfortable lead.

Sul Ross State applied pressure in the second half, forcing Dunegan and the defense to make three saves.

"The mentality was, like Coach (Collin Cone) said at halftime, keeping a clean sheet was the goal," said Bogba, minutes after taking a few moments by himself on the YellowJackets' bench to soak up his final game at LETU Soccer Field. "We had to make sure we did everything to keep the ball out of the box. Our center backs, our keeper, Austin, came up with a big save. Cord (Sabbatini) was excellent, Christian (Alvarado) was getting it done. The back line did a wonderful job."

LeTourneau had nine shots on goal, while Sul Ross State finished with four. Dunegan had three saves, and his defense was credited with another.

The YellowJackets, who attempted five corner kicks to the Lobos' zero, bounced back from a three-game skid with the pair of final home wins. Now they're trying to lock up a spot in the ASC Tournament, which begins Nov. 5.

"We're still fighting for a spot," Gray said. "Every point is needed."
